香港人不是中國人 – Hongkonger is not Chinese

Hong Konger is not Chinese – Simple!
Australian is not British, American is not British, Scots and Welsh won’t call themselves English.

My Hong Kong Husband

Hi!

Yesterday for Hong Kong it was 1st of July a.k.a. 香港特別行政區成立紀念日 – Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day. The holiday commemorates the transfer of the sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region connected with annual protest made by Hongkongers against government. This year: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-28/hong-kong-protests-to-underscore-leung-s-record-low-appeal.html . And to ‘celebrate’ that day I’ve decided to clear the differences between Hongkongers and Mainland Chinese. It’s not only problem of Hong Kong people, even Taiwanese people have to deal with dialogs like that:

Our friend: I’m (name), I’m from Taiwan.

His American classmate: So you’re Chinese.

Friend: No, I’m Taiwanese.

Of course from racial point of view 90% of them come from Han Chinese (漢族), it’s even majority in Singapore, not to mention it’s around 1/5 of all the people in the world. They share also…

  1. All hong konger need do is completely 去中國化,yes that include get rid of Chinese new year and Chinese character then people won’t confuse hong konger as ”Chinese”

    • 中國 and 華夏 are two different concepts. China and Chinese are two terms being exhausted by the CCP/modern China. I’m sure you know that there was no such thing called “China” in history until after the Qing nation fell – they were Han, Tang, Song, Yuen, etc.
Your interpretation seems to me that removing the Chinese elements of Hong Kong culture is the cure, but if we look at Singapore which preserves a certain degree of Eastern (Chinese) culture/elements in their country, and Taiwan also does (in fact does that much better than China), it only makes sense to “internalise” these so called Chinese tradition – it’s simply Hong Kong’s tradition. Hong Kong has long been a place where Western and Eastern cultures merge together to form a UNIQUE culture. Similarity between two cultures is fine, the important thing is the people of Hong Kong can understand this and accept the fact that there are linkage and similarity between the cultures in Hong Kong and in China but that does not mean that we are Chinese – all we need to say is “we are Hong Kongese” and the world recognise this!
It’s very abstract, and I have no authority in this space. I do,however, think that getting rid of the “Chinese culture” will not help a great deal. Hong Kong is all about “mixed culture”.

      • In public people won’t know you guys as ”hong kongese” the so call ”hong Kong culture” (beside the western culture) is just basically still Chinese culture and since there millions of Cantonese speaker in china or overseas identity themselves as Chinese.
Then best way for hong konger or taiwanese is fully 去中國化 like the Korean,Vietnamese and Japanese.
